The Recitalist

Chevis Anderson was born August 20th, 1982 to Roland and Elaine Anderson. Chevis first developed his love for music when, at age six, he picked up his father’s trumpet and was able to produce a sound.

From that moment on, his Mother encouraged him in everything that had to deal with music.

Chevis is a product of the Philadelphia Public School system. He attended Darroff Elementary School, which had a music class but very few working instruments. This did not stop Chevis; he wanted to learn so he used what they had. The available instrument was the clarinet. He learned to play it and developed a love for woodwinds. After leaving Darroff, Chevis attended Sulzberger Middle School.

His mother bought him an alto saxophone, which she had gotten from her co-worker, the first of many instruments he would ultimately own. Just as he was learning to play, the music program was eliminated from the Middle School, and Chevis had to seek out private lessons, which did not work out very well.

After leaving Middle School, Chevis attended Overbrook High School, where he joined the Jazz & Concert Bands; and the High School Show, Concert, and Gospel Choirs. The instruments available at Overbrook were sub-par, so Chevis decided in his senior year to save his money and buy his own tenor saxophone, instead of a car.

Upon graduating from Overbrook High, Chevis was accepted to six Colleges/Universities. He chose to become a Hornet! Chevis joined the Delaware State University Marching Band, better known as the Approaching Storm, and fell in love with music all over again.

This was his first experience in a marching band, marching with the tenor sax. Chevis later became Section Leader of the Tenor Sax, and decided to try the baritone horn. After a successful switch to Brass, he later became the Section Leader, and he has been a low brass player ever since.

Degree Earned - BA in Music Delaware State University- May 23rd 2010

In his Collegial tenure, Chevis became a Brother of the Eta Psi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc., Spring 2003; a Brother Gamma Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Fall 2003; President of the NPHC DSU Chapter, 04/05; Student Senator for the College of Visual and Performing Arts; and participated in a host of other campus activities and achievements.

  1. Chevis, I thoroughly enjoyed your craft. The concert was excellent. You showed quite a range of talent including composing. arranging, playing the various instruments, conducting, and surprising all with your vocals. You are very talented. May the blessing of the Lord lead you to places where your talent may be recognized and may you be recompensed for your labor of love.
